Most organizations move through five stages.

Level 1 — AI Experimentation

Developers use AI individually.

Characteristics:

  • No standards
  • No shared skills
  • High variability

Level 2 — Team Standards

Shared standards emerge.

Characteristics:

  • Consistent patterns
  • Reduced variability
  • Improved onboarding

Level 3 — Architecture Automation

Atomic Bomb and similar tools are introduced.

Characteristics:

  • Consistent structures
  • Faster feature delivery
  • Better maintainability

Level 4 — Agentic Development

MCP tools become available.

Characteristics:

  • Automated workflows
  • Architecture generation
  • Continuous validation

Level 5 — Organizational Intelligence

Skills become shared organizational knowledge.

Characteristics:

  • Predictable delivery
  • Shared expertise
  • Continuous improvement
